Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Phelps Program is an innovative, forward-thinking 3-year residency in family medicine — the first accredited family medicine residency program in New York State to be established since 1995.
We were founded on a unique partnership between an academic institution, a hospital and a federally qualified health center. Today, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Phelps Hospital and Open Door Family Medical Centers are partners in making our program mission a reality.
Our goal is to allow our residents to continue to grow and develop their skills throughout their professional careers
The pillars of our program mission are innovation, patient-centric care, academic/clinical excellence and a holistic approach:
Innovation: Training in a medical system that values and operates at the leading edge of technology and the Patient-Centered Medical Home model to deliver high quality care.
Patient Centric Care: The opportunity for residents to explore and lead a patient-centered medical home with hands-on training at a nationally recognized, community-based health center where patients are at the heart of the care team, engaged as active partners in their health.
Academic & Clinical Excellence: You will be training under the supervision of exceptionally trained medical clinicians across the full range of medical disciplines. The program offers clinical rotations with faculty who are committed, full-time, board-certified physicians. Residents work one-on-one with attending physicians on clinical rotations including OB/GYN, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, as well as other specialties/subspecialties.
A Holistic Approach: Behavioral science training experience is incorporated into the program, equipping residents with skills to interact sensitively with patients, recognizing, assessing, and initiating treatment for a range of patient needs.
